LINE BREAK
In typography and typesetting, a line break refers to the point where a line of text is divided or "broken" to fit within a particular space or layout. It determines how text wraps from one line to the next, especially when there is limited horizontal space available.
Line breaks can occur in various contexts, including printed materials such as books, newspapers, and magazines, as well as in digital formats like websites, documents, and emails. The purpose of line breaks is to ensure readability and maintain consistent formatting.
There are two primary types of line breaks:
Manual Line Break: Also known as a hard line break or forced line break, a manual line break is deliberately inserted by the user to start a new line. This is typically done by pressing the "Enter" or "Return" key on a keyboard. Manual line breaks allow the user to control the exact placement of line breaks in a document.
Automatic Line Break: Also referred to as a soft line break or word wrap, an automatic line break occurs when the text reaches the end of a line and needs to continue on the next line. Word processing software and text editors automatically insert these line breaks based on the available space and the predetermined formatting settings. Automatic line breaks help maintain readability and prevent text from extending beyond the width of the container or page.
The goal of line breaks is to create visually pleasing and readable text by avoiding awkward or overly long lines. Proper line breaks consider factors such as word spacing, hyphenation, punctuation placement, and maintaining the overall flow and coherence of the text.
